Trinidad Pier

Client: California State Coastal Conservancy
Funding Source: California State Coastal Conservancy
Project Location: Trinidad Harbor - Trinidad, CA

Pacific Affiliates was selected by the California State Coastal Conservancy and Trinidad Rancheria as the project engineer to design a replacement pier for the existing Trinidad Pier.  Over the years the Trinidad Pier had deteriorated to the point where vehicle traffic was prohibited and pedestrian traffic was unsafe.  In an effort to maintain this local landmark and coastal access, the California State Coastal Conservancy provided funds to design and permit a new pier to replace the existing pier.

Design of the new pier was carefully articulated to meet the needs of local fisherman, pedestrian traffic and research facilities used by Humboldt State University.  Once the design objectives had been determined, our team of engineers successfully designed and permitted the new concrete pier.  The first open-ocean pier permitted in the State of California in more than 50 years was completed under CEQA and NEPA review by working closely with the permitting agencies.  Permitting agencies included the United States Army Corps of Engineers, California State Coastal Commission, City of Trinidad, California Regional Water Quality Control Board, California Department of Fish and Game, US Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA Fisheries, California States Lands Commission, United States Coast Guard, and Yurok Ancestral Society.  Reviewing agencies included the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Federal Highways Administration.  The existing wooden pier will be replaced in full with a new state of the art concrete pier consisting of pre-stressed concrete decking, sea life resistant polyurea coated concrete piles, marine resistant railing, lighting, hoists, and walkways, as well as a new floating dock meeting accessibility standards.  Additionally, all stormwater runoff will be collected and disposed on land through an infiltration system, thus producing a zero net impact on sea life in Trinidad Harbor. Pacific Affiliates marine experience and strong relationships with the permitting agencies provided valuable information and data for future open ocean development projects. All project permits were successfully obtained in 2010 and the project is currently seeking construction funding.
