U.S. Coast Guard Station, Humboldt Bay, Breakwater Repair

Client: U.S. Coast Guard Station
Funding Source: U.S. Coast Guard Station
Project Location: Humboldt Bay – Samoa, CA

The U.S. Coast Guard commissioned Pacific Affiliates to contract the repair of the outer breakwater at the Humboldt Bay Station, located at the south end of the North Spit of Humboldt Bay.  Bathymetric and land surveys were provided by our firm to evaluate the condition of the rock breakwater and document the placement of armor stone along the channel side of the structure.  The surveys revealed that armor stone design slope was too steep and had not provided adequate structural support of the slumping breakwater.  Additional monitoring was conducted, during which time our firm worked with the U.S. Coast Guard Civil Engineering Unit, based in Oakland California to design and prepare contract documents and plans for the necessary breakwater repair work.  Upon successful bidding and award of the project, Pacific Affiliates provided contract administration and construction inspection, and as-built construction plans.  The collaborative effort of the two entities resulted in the successful construction and repair of the breakwater.
